Bitdefender Total Security 2013 is a rock solid product when it comes to PC security. I have used Bitdefender Total Security in the past and was not very pleased with it. It crippled my PC making it completely useless and I had to uninstall it in order to bring my PC back to working condition. This incident happened about 6-7 years ago ( or maybe more) and I have not used Bitdefender since then until recently I made my mind to give it another shot. Will Bitdefender Total Security 2013 be able to impress me this time or is it going to be the same old story ? Lets find out.
Installation Process of Bitdefender Total Security 2013
I had to download a small Bitdefender setup file to go ahead with the installation. This small setup file downloads the latest version of bitdefender from its servers. It downloaded about 260 MB of data. The installation and downloading was done in parallel. However, you have to wait for complete download to be done which was bit long process. During the installation, a quick scan is also done in parallel. It was impressive as not many security suite do that while installation.
I had to create a new Bitdefender account to use some of its features. The process was seamless and after entering the license details I was good to go. No restart was required after installation. The GUI is mostly black with many tabs such as Anti-virus, Firewall, Anti-Spam etc. A widget is added to the desktop. The widget gives you a hint of how is everything working on your system. Overall my first impression about bitdefender was good. The only improvement point I could figure out was a lengthy installation process and huge setup file. Some other Internet security suites such as Eset are much more compact in size compared to Bitdefender Total Security 2013. I think this is an area to improve upon in upcoming versions.
Bitdefender System Impact
Bitdefender Total Security 2013 disables Microsoft’s Windows Defender and Firewall automatically. I could not stop or kill any Bitdefender process easily. This is an effective step against malware which try to disable your security product. No add-on or any chrome browser extension is added yet Bitdefender scans all incoming HTTP traffic. The advantage of this is that it doesn’t matter which browser you choose to work with, Bitdefender Total Security 2013 will protect you during web surfing.
The performance of Bitdefender Total Security 2013 was decent. It is not the fastest security suite I have used till date but it’s not a resource hog either. RAM usage was high during boot up and updates but it comes down to about 30-38MB in doing general tasks. My PC boot time increased by about 12 seconds after installing Bitdefender. Note that measuring boot time is never accurate. Many security product use various means in order to reduce boot time. Some load their modules a bit late to give user an impression that PC is booting quickly.
Bitdefender Total Security 2013 uses black excessively in its main interface. There are separate sections for Anti-virus, firewall etc. Clicking on any of these tabs take you to a more detail settings of the respective section. I could easily navigate the GUI and find appropriate setting. The “Events” tab contain detail logging of everything going on your PC. Any pop-up or virus infection will have an entry in “Events” section. The autopilot is great feature. Basically, it manages everything on your behalf. You might never need to touch any setting if you set it to autopilot. Install and forget approach is most desirable for majority of users.
Anti-virus & Firewall Protection
Bitdefender Total Security 2013 is one of the strongest anti-virus out there. It has received outstanding score from almost all leading anti-virus testing labs such as Av-test.org and av-comparatives. No wonder it was able to clean and disinfect every nasty malware I tried to install on my PC. I just could not find anything which Bitdefender Total Security 2013 could not quarantine.
The only downside I found in the firewall was a very regular pop up about “ Port being blocked”. I tried to search more about this and found that this problem was faced by lot of users and was even prevalent in earlier versions. The support team at Bitdefender could not give me any satisfying explanation for this.
Other Great Features
Pay safe is a great feature for anyone doing financial transactions online. It provides a safe browser which has a secured environment for doing financial transactions used for online shopping.
Search anything on the web, Bitdefender Total Security 2013 highlights with a green tick mark whether the site is ranked safe or not. Again, no additional extension or add-on is installed in browser for this feature.
It helps you to erase any trace of your file. After shredding you file, it is impossible to recover it by any means.
Tune-Up your System
Bitdefender Total Security 2013 has features such as file-cleanup, disk defragmenter, registry cleaner in order to tune up you PC and make it faster.

Conclusion about Bitdefender Total Security 2013
Bitdefender Total Security 2013 is a great product which you can install without hesitation. It has best anti-virus and not very heavy on resources. Some extra features help you maintain your PC. Its malware cleaning is top-notch. The support team at Bitdefender is very helpful and would try their best to help you out. On down side, some bugs are still there in the latest version. It is not the fastest security product and some hiccups during un-installation were encountered. Overall, it’s a recommended product from my side and it’s not too expensive (in India particularly ) compared to other security products.
