FixMeStick is a very innovative product to help people get rid of nasty computer viruses and other malware infections from their computer. It is basically a USB device which can be used to boot your computer and clean the virus present on your PC with 3 powerful Anti-Virus engines from Kaspersky, Vipre and Sophos.
Booting with FixMeStick
FixMeStick USB has to boot up your PC in order to start the disinfection process. For this you can simply plug in the USB, change the BIOS setting in order to boot from USB first and finally start your PC. Another way is to plug in the FixMeStick USB on Windows PC. It will show a pop up saying “Reboot and Run FixmeStick”. Click on it so that it does the necessary changes and your PC reboots with FixMeStick OS next time.
After this step your PC would be booted in a Linux environment as FixMestick uses Lubuntu operating system. If this is the first time you are booting up with FixMeStick then it is desired that you update the database so that it can detect the latest malware using the new available signatures for its anti-virus engine. This makes it different from a rescue disc. Normally, you cannot update a rescue disc but you can do it with FixMeStick. You can connect to a Wi-Fi network by providing the desired credentials on the top right corner. FixMeStick made the procedure very simple to use. It was very straight forward to connect to my Wifi using the Lububntu network manager. After this process, the only thing left is the scanning part.
Scanning & Cleaning with FixMeStick
Before FixMeStick begins scanning your computer for malware, it first updates the anti-virus. This could take some time. It took about half an hour to update the complete database. FixMeStick display the message for me: “Go and grab a coffee” in order to indicate that my input would not be needed anymore and I can relax while FixMeStick looks for malware on my PC. Users would just need to wait after this step as FixMeStick take over control to do the cleanup task.
The scanning process required most time. It is in fact the only con that I found in FixMeStick. The scan speed is slow. It took more than 2.5 hours to finish the scan. This is the longest time I have ever seen for some Anti-Virus to scan my PC. Most of the Antivirus I have used took almost an hour to scan my PC. One of the reason could be scanning each file for the first time without skipping some files as done by most Anti-Virus today in order to improve scanning speed. FixMeStick use 3 Anti-Virus engine which could also be reason for such long scan time.
The disinfection process went smooth. FixMeStick could successfully clean all the malware samples I had implanted on my PC. It was not a surprise as it was using 3 powerful Anti-Virus engines from Kaspersky, Sophos and Vipre. All the malware present were removed and clear messages were displayed on the GUI. This was impressive as FixMeStick is most likely to be used under the circumstance when you are suffering from a severe malware infection or when your PC fails to start up properly or when your current AV fails to effectively quarantine a virus. Using 3 strong AV engines, FixMeStick ensures that malware is removed completely.
FixMeStick is recommended for those who suffer from serious virus infection. If you are not able to boot your PC due to some nasty virus or if you doubt that your PC is infected then FixMeStick can help you out. It is a recommended for people with not much knowledge about computer security. FixMeStick simple and straightforward scanning should be easy to deal with everyone. However, for security experts, I think it would be more appropriate to use rescue disc for this purpose. Overall, FixMeStick is a good option and can even be used as on-demand scanner once a month just to be sure that your PC is well protected and virus free.
