Vipre Antivirus 2012 is the latest version of antivirus released by GFI. I had the opportunity to review the previous version of Vipre Antivirus Premium which is now called Vipre Internet Security. There have been quite some changes in the latest version and some new features and development. Let’s look each of them in detail.
Installation of Vipre Antivirus 2012
Vipre installation package is small and has mere 28Mb of size. The best part was no more lengthy installation and asking of various questions to user. Simply enter key and you are good to go. It installs the signature by first downloading them from the Internet and at the end displays a message “You Rock!! “.
I like simple and clean interface. Vipre impress me in this regard. Its user interface is similar to previous version except for some cosmetic changes and fancy new images and taskbar icon. Instead of showing global threat level, the new version display the count of the threats it has successfully detected and neutralized.
The Main tabs are SCAN, PROTECTION & UPDTES. If everything is working correctly then you should see a Green Tick mark in front of every tab. clicking on Settings would lead to exploration of the advance settings for each tab respectively. The Scan Settings provide you with all the standard options. You can tweak each setting according to your need. One option I personally like was “Show me the Results and Let me Decide”. It gives the right to the user to neutralize or ignore any particular detection (Many vendors don’t give this option. They force you to accept whatever decision your Antivirus had taken on your behalf). Although most users would not need to change any settings but it is always a good option to provide as many settings to the user. For example, Trend Micro Antivirus User interface is also very simple and clean but it does not give any comprehensive set of settings to the user. I cannot change a lot of things in it which is disappointing. Email Protection guards you against dangerous emails containing some infected attachment. ThreatNet is used for community building of all Vipre Antivirus users. You can consider it similar to cloud detection where your details are sent and shared among many others in order to identify a new threat. You can opt out of this if you are not comfortable with sending your details to the server. I would personally recommend opting in for this service for better detection rates and helping GFI to build a solid cloud protection feature. One of the settings which confused me was “Completely refresh my definitions”. I did not understand why anyone would want to download whole signatures again. Overall, I like the interface. The cool blue GUI is pleasant, simple and would not confuse normal users by giving them too many options in front screen.
Detection Against Malware
GFI is one of the new participant in the independent test conducted by AV-Testing company called AV-Comparative’s. Vipre is scoring very well in all the tests. Vipre scored quite well in Real World tests. It was not the top performer, so there is scope of improvement but nonetheless it was still among top product in the test results. This is particularly commendable because it is competing against companies like Norton, Kaspersky etc which are much larger organization and have been in the security sector for so long. Hence, scoring almost equivalent results (and sometimes even higher in some test) should earn it more credits.
It has also scored very well in AV-Tests.org tests. Blocking of Active and widespread malware is most important and Vipre did score great in this section.
Some Useful Goodies In Vipre Antivirus 2012
Vipre Antivirus includes some features which are part of some expensive security package in some vendors. It can clean your system and remove junk files. The Secure File Eraser completely removes all traces of a file so that it is not possible to get it back by any means. History Cleaner removes temporary files, cookies and cache of various browser and many other leftover items. The PC Explorer gives you details of start-up items, running processes along with their trustworthiness indicator (a green tick if it’s safe).
Vipre is a great security product. It offers great protection at good price. If you are not satisfied with your current antivirus then you should definitely give Vipre a try. Its customer support was prompt and very helpful. Unlike some vendors, who just say “sorry” and tell you to reinstall the product if any problem occurs; Vipre Guys actually help you to resolve an issue. Do tell us your reviews if you use this product. Vipre Antivirus 2012 is a recommended product from me.
