Norton Internet Security 2012 Review: Symantec recently launched its latest version of security product called Norton Internet Security 2012. New developments in this release include new GUI or front screen. It added new features such as storage and sync of login details over the cloud so that it could be accessed anytime and anywhere. SONAR has also been improved in this version. Let’s cover all these features in detail in subsequent sections.
Norton’s installation is one of the most easiest installation among all security products. The setup was easily installed within a few minutes with just one click. If you are upgrading from previous version of Norton Internet Security then your previous license would automatically be imported and activation would be done seamlessly.
The front screen of Norton Internet Security 2012 has been altered a bit. It has been provided with fewer options in order to simplify the interface. You can click on Advanced link in order to get back the look and options as there in version 2011. With these options, you can quickly do all type of scans such as quick, full or custom, update the product etc.
At the bottom, the CPU usage has also been provided along with the percentage consumed by Norton Internet Security. The Performancetab is same as before and provides the graph of CPU usage over time and also provides with the details of installations of various applications and malware detections from the date of installation.
The Settings tab has also been redesigned a bit in order to simplify the task. I like the various categorizations done in this version. The Computer, Network, Web, General and Help tabs provide you with appropriate options accordingly. Finding the various settings and options was easy and it should be fairly easy was for anyone to browse through the settings.
Start-up Manager is the new feature in 2012 version. It is present in Norton 360 version. It displays the start-up programs. You can conveniently turn off the programs at start-up using this feature. The resource usage indicator has also been provided which gives you an idea about the CPU burden by the respective program at start-up.
Norton Identity Safe is used to store the various password and other login details. It secures your important details by encrypting these important login details. The new development in this version’s identity safe is that it could store your details securely online with your Norton Account. Hence you can sync your details with multiple computers using the same Norton Account.
Norton Reputation based scanning verifies your downloaded files for malware and also looks up to the cloud in order to identify the recently released malware.
SONAR is also improved in this version in order to heuristically identify the latest threats whose signature have not been released, based on their behaviour. Heuristic scanning has become very important these days since nearly thousands of new malware enter the internet every day and it is not possible to quickly provide signature for all these malwares. Thus heuristic scanning play vital role in protecting you from new threats.
Some standard feature includes daily, hourly and scheduling of scans. You can turn off the computer automatically when the scan is complete. Norton automatically scans your system when your computer is idle.
Firewall: Norton is supposed to have one of the most powerful firewall among various internet security suites, next to Kaspersky. You can assign rules to allow or block various applications to access internet.
Web Surfing Protection: The setup automatically installs plugins in Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome. It warns you of fraud and dangerous websites and blocks them before they can harm your system.
My personal experience in performance issue for Norton Internet Security 2012 has been impressive. I found it very light on my system and hardly observed any delay or lag in performance of the machine. The boot time was very less and almost equivalent to Eset Security Suite. It added only a few seconds to boot time and was overall very light on system.
In Performance Test done by AV-Comparatives on August 2011, Norton scored No. 1 Rank with total of 188.3 points.
Symantec Norton has also been scoring 5.0 out of 6.0 points in AV-Test reports. This is considered a good score among the competition.
Norton has been scoring very well in various Antivirus tests too. It has got one of the highest score in “Real Word” test done by AV-Comparatives. It is Ranked no. 1 on basis of test during Jan-Aug 2012 tests done by AV-Comparatives as represented by following chart.
However the latest On-Demand test has been disappointing for Norton and it has got ADVANCED rating. It has reported a large no. of false positive detection. This is supposed to be done by SONAR’s wrong conclusions about some files.
The test results given by AV-Test are also in favour of Norton. It has consistently scored very well in various tests done during this year.
Norton has also successfully able to pass VB100 test. Hence, when it comes to detection, you can rely on Norton to protect you well enough.
Symantec Norton has been rightly chosen as Top Security Product for past few years by leading magazines and the latest version 2012 is sure to continue the tradition. It is a light product and protects you well. You can regard it as “Install and Forget” product. Their customer cares was friendly and prompt in replying to my queries. I could confidently recommend Symantec’s Norton Internet Security 2012 to anyone.
